The Arizona Mining Association (AMA) is a non-profit corporation comprised of entities engaged in mining and mineral processing in Arizona. In 2020, AMA member companies produced approximately 72% of the nation’s newly mined copper, along with significant amounts of associated valuable co-products (e.g., gold, silver, selenium, tellurium, and molybdenum). The AMA is the unified voice of responsible, sustainable and safe mining in Arizona. We support educational programs that demonstrate the importance and benefits of mining to the economy and the quality of life. Our members benefit from productive relationships and alliances with government, business associations and natural resource industry groups. Through our advocacy, we help Arizona continue to be a premier location for mining investment in the U.S. as we are the number one non-fuel mineral producing state in the U.S. and the second most friendly jurisdiction in the world for mining investment.

The Education Program Director is primarily responsible for planning and implementing a mining education awareness program for students K-12 to increase interest and awareness of the mining industry as a future career possibility. Responsibilities will include:
• Research existing mining education programs to develop and manage an outreach program specific to AMA
• Establish a strategy to engage AMA member companies in the implementation of the outreach program with primary responsibility being that of the Education Program Director
• Work with existing mining education programs to leverage opportunities (i.e., University of Arizona, SME Chapters, Mineral Education Coalition, etc.)
• Evaluate the effectiveness (i.e., number of people reached, change in knowledge and perception of mining, career pathways, etc.) of mining education program on a quarterly basis
• Identify, develop, and write public and private grant proposals – separate and apart from AMA member companies – to fund, sustain, and grow the program
• Network with K-12, community college, and university staff to incorporate mining in current and future education initiatives
• Identify and partner with existing education and workforce programs to leverage opportunities to include information about mining (i.e., Arizona Science Center, Desert Botanical Garden, Pipeline AZ, etc.)
• Work closely with the University of Arizona Mining College on outreach and programs for K-12 programs.
• Perform technical, analytical, and professional tasks with particular emphasis on the collection, interpretation, aggregation and evaluation of research and data from inside and outside resources
• Develop relationships with appropriate business and government contacts
• Represent the AMA in a positive manner
• Assist the AMA Executive Director in project development pertaining to education initiative
This position reports to the Executive Director of the AMA.
• Bachelor’s degree in science, education, communication, business, or related field
• 3 to 5 years’ professional experience in an office, classroom or both environments
• At least one year of experience in securing foundation and/or corporate grants
• At least one year of experience in project or program development
• Ability to develop and maintain a project budget
• Ability to complete complex assignments with strict attention to detail
• Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills and can provide writing samples upon request
• Must be a self-starter and organized
• Ability to work with all levels of professional staff, faculty, administration, and external agencies
• Ability to work effectively with populations representing diverse backgrounds, life experiences, and abilities
• Mining Industry knowledge
• Background in environmental sciences or geosciences
• Familiar with STEM programming/curriculum
• Strong project management skills
• Experience in Internet-based research skills and ability to synthesize research and data
Work is performed in an office environment as well as outside of the office at schools and in the community. You must have transportation and the ability to travel to schools and other locations. Ability to use a telephone, personal computer, and other electronic technology is required. Expertise with word processing, spreadsheets, and databases is essential. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, are indispensable.
